Someone told us that bags of money and/or drugs have been found floating in the ocean around Little Corn Island, Nicaragua.
Drug dealers on the ocean might see another boat, perhaps a police/army boat, get scared of getting caught and quickly dump the drugs or money overboard.
When we asked what people who found such bags did with the cache, no one would answer.
So guess what we did the next few days?!
Of course. We went to the virgin west side of the island to spend the day at the beach, eyes peeled intently for anything floating near shore!
Focused enthusiastically on the water, we scrutinized the ocean for anything bobbing innocently on the gentle waves.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, we never came across even an old shoe floating on the flat water. Nothing. Nada. Miles of crystal clear turquoise water, but not a thing floating on the sea.
We did, however, get caught in a tropical rainstorm, miles from home, on that beautiful and deserted beach.
It came up so suddenly; a flash storm typical of tropical climates.
One minute the sun was blazing down; the next second the sky was black. The rain came blasting down; we didn’t even have time to gather our clothes.
All we could do was duck back and watch incredulous as the warm rain poured down…
Crouched flat against the rock and under a branch of a Banyan tree in a bit of a shelter, we still got drenched to the skin.
It came down so hard, we could barely see the ocean…
It was exhilarating though, and after the black clouds passed quickly over, the hot sun was shining again minutes later. One could hardly believe there had even been a rain storm!
We rigged up clotheslines on tree branches to dry our blankets and clothes, and laughed at this little snag in our afternoon plans.
Now we felt like true island people. We joked about wearing banyan leaves and coconut shell halves for our island clothes.
Best to just lay back in the sun now, relax, and enjoy…
