Why is Reading so important?

I can recall the precise moment that I learned to read a book. I was so excited! A whole new world opened up to me and I started reading voraciously. I read constantly, and was astounded by the vast variety of books there were and the thrill of the stories satisfied me to the core. Then someone told me that I would ruin my eyesight if I read too much, and reluctantly I limited my reading as a child.

Once, when my cousin J asked what I wanted to be when I grow up (we were in public school), I shyly admitted that I wanted to be a writer. She didn’t laugh. She was the only person I dared tell my secret dream.

Books were and always will be important to me, and I read. Books have been my escape, especially in times of stress. They relaxed me as they enveloped me in another place and time. Reading was a tremendous boost to my entire life, both intellectually and emotionally. It helped me to make sense of the world and people and cultural differences everywhere. It took me to places I had never been. It developed a keen sense of imagination and possibilities. It sharpened my English skills in writing, and as I read famous classic writers, I developed a deep admiration for their literacy and writing abilities.

It`s a wonderful feeling to discover exciting universes between the covers of a book.[spacer height=”20px”]

But now digital devices seem to demand all my time: emails, text messages, games, cell phones, ipads, laptops, smart watches. We are a society addicted to digital devices. How can I ever have time to read again? Can I actually turn off my laptop and read for an hour a day? Or turn off the TV after 9 pm and read for an hour to two? Funny, I just remembered that I used to leave my book in the bathroom and read just one chapter, every time I went in. I would read a book in just a few days! (Note to self: start doing this again.)

[spacer height=”20px”]

When I read more often, I had more energy, and more focus than I’ve had for ages. Books are still the same wonderful things they used to be. I want to have that thrill again… to become so involved in a book that I cannot put it down.
