Our Secret Beach (Shhh! Don’t tell anyone.)

Shhh! Don’t tell anyone. This beach is so perfect, so tranquil, so gorgeous, we don’t want thousands of people to find out and ruin it. We’ll tell you about it, but we’re not telling you exactly where it is. It’s in Tonga, somewhere on one of the 176 islands of the Kingdom of Tonga.

Tonga, Vava'u - Aerial 2

We overheard some locals speaking softly about a secret beach. I asked about it, but everyone seemed to turn away and get busy with something else. Hmmm. Then I asked one of the girls that I had befriended who worked at the little resort where we were staying. Yes, she confirmed that there was a secret beach that locals visited, and she could tell me how to get there, but we may not be able to find it. Oh please, I begged, tell me!

Down the road, across the field, down another road, across another field, look for some rocks, and a lone tree, go closer, and you will see a narrow path going down the steep bank. Be careful about going down. You will be there.

So off we went. We walked a long way, often confused, changing direction, stopping to reassess, but sure enough, we eventually found it. Paradise. Truly, paradise.

No one else there, all day long.

We played in the beautiful crystal clear sparkling blue water; we read; ate our lunch; swam; snorkeled a bit; we sat inside the cove of rocks in the soft white sand; watched the waves crashing against the reef for hours and hours; and we took photos trying and trying to capture the sheer natural beauty of the place.

We returned to Secret Beach a few days later. It was our second last day in Tonga, and we wished we had discovered this glorious hidden gem a few weeks earlier, but then everything in Tonga was just simply gorgeous.
